2. INSCENIZATION OF WATER LEGENDS (video in English).

Story about Sward Lake, created by Holger (11th grade)

Original story of Estonian national epic "Kalevipoeg" (Kalev's Son) was written by Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald. The main material is taken from Estonian folklore of a giant hero named Kalevipoeg. The tales have similarities with national epics from neighbouring regions, especially the Finnish Kalevala

Story of the video:

Vellavere village lake (lake "Tootsi"), also known as Mõõkjärv (Swordlake) is located at Vellavere village. Northwestern and Southeastern shore of the lake is covered with bog, the southern shore is flat and steep, covered with fields. On the northern shore we can find the meadow with some birches.

The depth of the lake is remarkable -  25 meters, which is the greatest in Estonia. Some of the most interesting findings from the Swordlake: first larvas of Bengtsson dragonflys and chironomidae in Estonia. It used to be the home for crawfishes who have disappeared after the plague.

How the lake got its name Swordlake:

Kalevipoeg (Kalev's Son) was travelling around overland. At the location of Swordlake he was facing against a cattle of devils and had a war against them. Kalev fought against them and beheaded all devils except the headman of devils. After the long battle against the headman Kalev whacked with his two hands. The devil's headman got lost, Kalev's sword forced deep in the ground and it made a big hole which got filled with water.

People named the lake to Swordlake as it was deep and formed by Kalev's sword.
